🌿 5 Signs You're Running on Empty (And What To Do About It)

May 2025 Β· 5 min read

Most of us don't notice we're burning out until we're already on the floor.

We're good at pushing through. At telling ourselves it's just a busy week. At promising ourselves we'll rest "once things calm down." But things don't calm down. And one day we wake up and realise we have been running on empty for so long we've forgotten what full feels like.

Here are five signs that you're there β€” or getting close. And what to actually do about it.

1. You're Tired No Matter How Much You Sleep

This is the one people notice first. You get seven hours, eight hours, and you still wake up exhausted. You drag yourself through the morning on coffee. By 2pm you can barely keep your eyes open.

This kind of tired isn't fixed by sleep. It's emotional and nervous system exhaustion β€” your body carrying more than it was designed to carry for longer than it was designed to carry it. Sleep helps, but it's not the solution. Rest is. And rest is not the same as sleep.

Rest means doing something that actually replenishes you β€” not just lying down.

A walk without your phone. Sitting in the garden for ten minutes doing nothing. Reading something you actually enjoy. These are rest. Scrolling your phone in bed is not rest β€” it's avoidance dressed up as downtime.

2. Small Things Are Setting You Off

Someone says something mildly annoying and you want to cry β€” or scream. A minor inconvenience sends you spiralling. You snap at people you love over nothing and then feel terrible about it.

When we are running on empty, our emotional regulation goes first. We lose the buffer between feeling and reacting. Everything feels bigger than it should because we have no reserves to cushion it.

This is not you being "too sensitive." This is your nervous system waving a white flag.

3. You've Stopped Enjoying Things You Used to Love

The hobby you used to lose yourself in feels like a chore. You used to love cooking β€” now you can't face it. You'd read before bed every night β€” now you stare at your phone instead, not really taking anything in.

When we're depleted, pleasure is one of the first things to go. Not because we stop deserving it β€” but because our nervous system is in survival mode, and survival mode has no interest in enjoyment. It just wants to get through the day.

4. You Feel Disconnected β€” Even When You're With People

You're at the dinner table but you're not really there. You're in the conversation but you're watching it from a slight distance. You feel lonely in a room full of people. You smile and nod and say the right things, but inside there's a quiet numbness.

Disconnection is one of the subtler signs of burnout β€” and one of the most unsettling. We're wired for connection. When we can't feel it even when it's right in front of us, something is seriously off.

5. You Can't Remember the Last Time You Felt Okay

Not happy. Not great. Just… okay. Steady. Yourself.

If you genuinely can't remember β€” if "feeling okay" sounds like a distant memory or even a fantasy β€” you're not just tired. You're depleted at a level that needs real attention.

So What Do You Actually Do?

The honest answer is: you have to stop before you can start. You cannot fill an empty cup by running faster.

You don't have to overhaul your life overnight. But you do have to stop pretending this is sustainable. It isn't. And you are worth more than a life spent running on empty.
