๐ฟ The One Morning Habit That Changes Everything
May 2025 ยท 4 min read
I'm going to tell you what it is upfront, because I hate it when articles make you read to the end to find out: it's intentional silence before you look at your phone.
That's it. That's the habit. Ten minutes โ ideally more, but ten will do โ of quiet before you let the outside world in.
I know. It sounds almost insultingly simple. But let me tell you why it works, because the reason matters.
The First 10 Minutes Set the Tone for Everything
The moment you pick up your phone in the morning, you hand over control of your mind. Someone else's emergency becomes yours. Someone's opinion enters your head before your own thoughts have had a chance to form. You switch immediately into reactive mode โ responding to the world rather than meeting it with intention.
Do this enough mornings and reactive becomes your baseline. You stop feeling like the author of your day and start feeling like you're just getting through it.
The first input of the day shapes the texture of everything that follows. Choose it deliberately.
What to Do With Those 10 Minutes
You don't have to meditate. You don't have to journal. You don't have to do anything Instagram-worthy. Here are options โ pick what actually appeals to you:
- Sit with a hot drink and do nothing. Just be. Watch the light. Listen to the house. Let your mind wander without directing it.
- Write three things you're grateful for. Not performatively. Actually think about them. Let yourself feel them for a moment.
- Do five minutes of slow breathing. In for four counts, hold for four, out for six. That's it. Your nervous system will thank you.
- Read something nourishing. A poem. A page of a book you love. Something that feeds you rather than informs you.
- Sit outside. Even for five minutes. Natural light in the morning regulates your cortisol, improves your sleep that night, and shifts your mood more reliably than most supplements.
The Resistance You'll Feel
Your brain will tell you that you don't have time. That you need to check your messages. That something might be urgent. That this is a luxury you can't afford.
Here's the honest answer: if you genuinely cannot find ten minutes before your phone in the morning, you don't have a time problem. You have a boundaries problem. And that is worth looking at.
Most of us have ten minutes. We just spend them scrolling before we're even fully awake.
Start Tomorrow
Put your phone on the other side of the room tonight. When you wake up, don't cross the room to get it โ not yet. Make your drink. Sit down. Give yourself ten minutes first.
Do it for seven days. Notice whether your mornings feel different. Notice whether you feel slightly more like yourself.
I'd bet everything that you do.
